Description: This is a nice update of an overview of the principles of anesthetic management for patients with unusual diseases. It is also accessible online, making it very convenient to consult 24/7. The previous edition was published in 2008.
Purpose: The primary purpose is to provide readily accessible information about uncommon disease conditions to practicing anesthesiologists. With the expansion in the amount of medical knowledge, no one can stay up to date about all medical conditions, especially rare ones. This book goes a long way to help anesthesiologists plan safe anesthesia for patients with these conditions.
Audience: Designed for anesthesiologists at all levels of experience, this book would be of great help to anesthesiologists on call who could come across a patient in the middle of the night with a rare medical condition.
Features: The 21 chapters cover disorders related to an organ or system as well as disorders of behavior, pregnancy-related diseases, geriatric-related problems, pediatric-related problems, burn issues, and trauma. The congenital heart diseases are extremely well covered. Despite the multiple authors, the writing quality is sustained throughout. Each chapter includes key points, basic pathophysiology of the disorder, anesthetic considerations for the disease, and management guidelines. The text is supplemented by many tables and color illustrations. The book covers a lot of ground quickly, and it is more about principles of management and how to avoid major complications. It does not cover pathophysiology of diseases in great detail, nor does it include detailed discussions about how to evaluate patients with these rare disorders.
Assessment: This is still the only book out there that addresses this aspect of anesthetic management. It is brief, to the point, easy to read, accessible 24/7, and makes quick general recommendations about management. In the middle of the night, it can be a life saver for anesthesiologists, no matter how experienced they are. It is a must-have for every practicing anesthesiologist.
