Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Mohammed M Minhaj, MD (University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine)
Description: This question-and-answer anesthesiology review dedicates chapters to different subspecialty areas (e.g., cardiovascular/obstetrics) or broad topics (e.g., machine). The previous edition was published in 2003.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide questions and answers similar to those on board certification/recertification examinations. Readers can then identify areas of strengths and weaknesses to help them study. This is a worthwhile objective, as oftentimes residents/students/faculty need a different source of review material than just the texts to supplement their studying.
Audience: The audience is mainly residents in training as they prepare for their board certification exams, but practitioners who are enrolled in the American Board of Anesthesiology Maintenance of Certification in Anesthesiology program and preparing for the recertification exam can also benefit.
Features: The book is divided into sections based on either topics (machines, pharmacology, or physiology) or subspecialty areas (cardiovascular or obstetric anesthesia). Each section has questions followed by an answer subsection with explanations/references for the listed answer choices. For this edition, the questions have been updated to reflect the current examinations (i.e., no more "K-Type" questions) and answers/questions updated to reflect current science.
Assessment: Overall, this is an excellent study aid and adjunct to a resident in training's basic textbook. When used in conjunction with a major reference in the field, it can help hone a reader's study efforts. The new edition better reflects the current board examination.
From the Publisher
“At the onset of Anesthesia, A Comprehensive Review, 3rd Ed., Hall and Chantigian state a clear purpose to their text, namely ‘to identify areas of weakness so that the reader can focus on appropriate topics’ (Preface, p. V). Given the breadth of information review, Hall and Chantigian easily meet their goal.”

    Strongly recommend!

Last July I had to take the ABA MOCA written exam
since I have been in anesthesia practice for 9 years.
I easily passed the exam and this review book was
my main source of study. It does a good job of reviewing
concepts you have not thought of since residency...
especially if you are in private practice like me.

    Great review for written boards

Great book, glad they took out the K-type questions, loved the convenience of having the book online and the review questions mode made it more fun to use.
