Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Woo Chan Kim, MD (University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine)
Description: This second edition review book employs approximately 1,000 board-type questions to highlight pertinent information within various subspecialties of anesthesia. The answer section devotes a paragraph or more (with occasional tables/figures) to present a comprehensive explanation of each question and the corresponding answer.
Purpose: It is intended to serve as a review tool. Its aim is to underscore the important concepts in the practice of anesthesiology and question the reader about them. These objectives hold strong emphasis especially to graduating residents or new practitioners preparing for the certification exam. The quality of the questions and the appropriate level at which the knowledge is tested are commendable. The answer section also provides a concise, yet thorough explanation of each topic.
Audience: This book is specifically targeted to anesthesiology residents or anesthesiologists in practice who are preparing for the certification exam. It also may serve as a tool to reexamine one's knowledge base for those who seek to review pertinent topics in anesthesiology.
Features: It is sparingly illustrated, but the few illustrations are pertinent and easy to review. The references are the latest editions of major anesthesiology text books authored by experts. Not many articles are referenced. The topics of critical care and renal and hepatic physiology are not reviewed in any detail.
Assessment: This book presents the pertinent information and knowledge required for the certification exam exceptionally well. The questions reflect the level of the certification exam quite closely. It may prove extremely useful for residents preparing for the exam. Of note, the actual board exam contained a number of questions which were nearly identical to the information being tested in this review book. It should serve as a valuable addition to the library of any individual preparing for the exam as well as anesthesia department libraries. As new information evolves in the field of anesthesiology, new editions highlighting such developments seem warranted.

From the Publisher
“At the onset of Anesthesia, A Comprehensive Review, 3rd Ed., Hall and Chantigian state a clear purpose to their text, namely ‘to identify areas of weakness so that the reader can focus on appropriate topics’ (Preface, p. V). Given the breadth of information review, Hall and Chantigian easily meet their goal.”
