Editorial Reviews
From the Publisher
"This book provides a comprehensive review of current anaesthetic practice… It is well illustrated with uncluttered diagrams and tables together with useful key points highlighted at the end of each chapter. The format in size, layout, and content is aimed at the examination candidate, but the reality is, it is a book for all."- British Journal of AnaesthesiaFrom The Critics
Reviewer: Aisling Conran, MD(University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine)Description: This book provides brief reviews of pertinent topics in anesthesiology in a stimulating question and answer format.
Purpose: The editor intends to expand one's understanding of anesthesiology and the perioperative management of patients by challenging the reader to respond to each question with an answer, and then review the answer provided by the authors. Certainly, this is a worthwhile objective. Like rounds or oral boards, many topics are covered with brief, well thought out questions and answers.
Audience: This is clearly an excellent book for medical students. The question and answer format is stimulating, provokes interest, and covers a wide variety of topics — too many for one individual to cover on a teaching rotation. The anesthesia resident may also find this review useful as an addition to a standard textbook. For the resident and practitioner, it may be most useful as a review for oral boards. The questions and answers, if one actively participates, are akin to the oral boards. Dr. Duke is an assistant professor at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in the Department of Anesthesia.
Features: Preoperative assessment, intraoperative concerns, critical care medicine, postoperative pain management, and emergency room situations are presented in the question and answer format. The complexity of the recovery room and pediatric anesthesia are conveyed in this short format, especially for students. The well placed tables and occasional illustrations emphasize important concepts.
Assessment: This second edition brings an energizing approach to reviewing anesthesia. Students, residents, nurses, and practitioners are familiar with the question and answer format and will likely find this book a stimulating addition to their library. As anesthesiology continues to grow as a specialty and research continues, updates such as this edition are needed to remain up-to-date in one's practice.
