Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 6–9—Still reeling from Fang's departure in Fang (2010), Max and the flock don't get the chance to enjoy any downtime. There is a new group bent on saving the world by destroying all humans to make room for an enhanced generation of genetically modified children. Not only must Max decide what to do about this new threat, but she is also dealing with her own confused feelings about Dylan, who has joined the Flock, and Fang, her best friend and soul mate who has left her. Meanwhile, Fang has been busy recruiting his own gang of teens, all with different superpowers, in order to combat the same Doomsday Group that Max and the Flock are investigating. Rebecca Soler narrates the seventh title (2011, both Little, Brown) in the series by James Patterson with a youthful voice and an edge that matches Max's sharp personality. Short chapters keep the action-driven plot moving quickly. The narration is accompanied by music during scenes of heavy action or emotion and by the sporadic use of sound effects such as breaking glass and footsteps. Few questions are answered and several new ones are raised. While this title is unlikely to draw in new listeners this late in the series, Angel should tide fans over as they await the upcoming series finale.—Amanda Raklovits, Champaign Public Library, IL

Meet the Author

James Patterson

JAMES PATTERSON was selected by teens across America as the Children's Choice Book Awards Author of the Year in 2010. He is the internationally bestselling author of the highly praised Maximum Ride novels, the Witch & Wizard series, Med Head, Suzanne's Diary for Nicholas, and the detective series featuring Alex Cross and the Women's Murder Club. His books have sold more than 205 million copies worldwide, making him one of the bestselling authors of all time. He lives in Florida.

Biography

James Patterson had been working as a very successful advertising copywriter when he decided to put his Masters degree in English to a somewhat different use. Inspired by bestselling hair-raising thrillers like The Day of the Jackal and The Exorcist, Patterson went to work on his first novel. Published in 1976, The Thomas Berryman Number established him as a writer of tightly constructed mysteries that move forward with the velocity of a bullet. For his startling debut, Patterson was awarded the prestigious Edgar Award for Best First Mystery Novel—an auspicious beginning to one of the most successful careers in publishing.

A string of gripping standalone mysteries followed, but it was the 1992 release of Along Came a Spider that elevated Patterson to superstar status. Introducing Alex Cross, a brilliant black police detective/forensic psychologist, the novel was the first installment in a series of bestselling thrillers that has proved to be a cash cow for the author and his publisher.

Examining Patterson's track record, it's obvious that he believes one good series deserves another…maybe even a third! In 2001, he debuted the Women's Murder Club with 1st to Die, a fast-paced thriller featuring four female crime fighters living in San Francisco—a homicide detective, a medical examiner, an assistant D.A., and a cub reporter. The successful series has continued with other numerically titled installments. Then, spinning off a set of characters from a previous novel (1998's When the Wind Blows), in 2005 he published Maximum Ride: The Angel Experiment. Featuring a "flock" of genetically engineered flying children, the novel was a huge hit, especially with teen readers, and spawned a series of vastly popular fantasy adventures.

In addition to continuing his bestselling literary franchises, Patterson has also found time to co-author thrillers with other writers—including Peter de Jonge, Andrew Gross, Maxine Paetro, and Howard Roughan—and has even ventured into romance (Suzanne's Diary for Nicholas, Sam's Letters to Jennifer) and children's literature (santaKid). Writing at an astonishing pace, this prolific author has turned himself into a one-man publishing juggernaut, fulfilling his clearly stated ambition to become "the king of the page-turners."

Good To Know

Patterson's Suzanne's Diary For Nicholas was inspired by a diary his wife kept that tracked the development of their toddler son.

Two of Patterson's Alex Cross mysteries (Along Came a Spider and Kiss the Girls) have been turned into films starring Morgan Freeman; in 2007, a weekly television series premiered, based on the bestselling Women's Murder Club novels.

    who are these people?

I feel like JP rushed through this book. Max doesn't sound like herself, Fang is just....*sigh* and Dylan is more annoying then ever. Angel is no longer the megalomaniac trapped inside a little girl's body - she's sweet and kind just like before. So confusing. This book has a bit of a Hunger Games feel about it, especially at the end. It was definitely poorly written, especially compared to the other books in this series. I'm hoping JP can pull himself together and finish strong. Hoping.

    Ehhh....

I used to LOVE this series...but now Patterson seems to just want to satisfy the people who adore Faxness or whatever it's called. Max isn't the Max she was before. Now she's all mopey and depressed...she wouldn't admit to EVER loving Fang. OVER HER DEAD BODY. And Patterson always changes her appearance. This series had MUCH more potential...if Patterson wasn't such a sloppy writer...uggh. Sometimes I wish I could go back and rewrite it myself...

Leaves you wanting something else, but still pretty good

For those of you that know the series, this was actually pretty good, except for the resolution to the major issue. Dont worry, you still here from fang. There is definitely a lot of loose ends to be wrapped up in the last book, which is projected to come out about this time next year. cant wait!!!

    I Also Recommend:

    OMG

This series is pretty great. The 1st book is really good, the 2nd is great, and the 3rd is pretty epic. Unfortunately, the 4th and 5th are rather bland, romantic, and preachy. The 6th really made up for it though. If I were new to the series, I would skim the 4th and 5th books, but do sort of read them if you want to read the 6th. I can't wait for the 7th to come out. Angel really freaks me out sometimes, but honestly, the titles of these books just went south after the 3rd book, "Saving the World and Other Extreme Sports"

    Maximum ride books

I love the maximum ride books, but i feel that this book kind of messed up the entire series. I liked how it was going without dylan and prophecies about fang dying. I really liked how max and fang were together. Hope the next book(if there is more) will be alot better. Also hoping fang and max will get back together. I mean max and fang were the best parts about all the books. Hope the series gets better.

    Fang rocks dalyn doesnt

I hate how fang and max broke up in the last book and now when they meet up again theyre like distant friends. That dylan dude deserves to die in a bottomless pit with his stupid wings cut off. I also hate the whole '' they were made for each other'' crap! Its stupid. Fang belongs with max. He really does make her strong. ( and he is a touch bit dark, mysterious, and SEXY!) --------please dont judge me! You all know he's sexy deep in your hearts!

Epic faces are epic, and so is this book. :D

If u haven't read this book yet, u totally need to!!! But first you should read the Angel Experiment, the first book in the series. This book is the seventh book in the series (aka: the second to last one). The whole series is awesome, and u NEED to read it. It's for guys and girls, eleven and up. The series is about six kids, who have been experimented on by scientists, and have wings and other powers. Okay, that probably sounds REALLY cheesy, but the book is hilarious. Especially Max, the main character. She's a girl; it's short for Maximum Ride. Most importantly, this is one of THE BEST SERIES EVER. I rank it up there with Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, and the Hunger Games triology. So seriously, READ THIS!!!!!!!!
