    more from this reviewer

Recommended to those who crave something out of the ordinary!

Brought to you by OBS Staff member Autumn

In the first installment of "The Chosen Chronicles", Karen Dales introduces her readers to "The Angel of Death". He is abandoned at birth, grows up in seclusion and begins his journey in discovering what he really is. Adopted and chosen by Father Paul Notus, he is equally loved and feared. When he is asked to discover the identity of a vampire murderer, he comes up against those who would try to steal his soul and kill what he holds dear. Dales' characters were dark, layered and intricate. The story was fast paced and gripping with an ending that will leave you breathless.

I really loved Gwyn as "The Angel." He is not your typical vampire hero. I found him to be just a little sad and misunderstood as he is constantly torn between his own desires and protecting his people from destruction.

I enjoyed the book and would recommend it to those who love vampires but crave something out of the ordinary.

Supernatural protagonist are usually strong and powerful. A read

Supernatural protagonist are usually strong and powerful. A reader who expects this characterization will be strongly disappointed in this protagonist. A compassionate "ancient" vampire (Chosen) who was "never a human" and supposedly a superb fighter provides a good foundation but by page 300 the reader is so disappointed it is sheer stubborness that forces us to continue reading. The protagonist is WEAK. He has no dignity, no powers that others don't have, no pride or confidence. He can't even fight because the human girl he likes may see. No one respects his opinion or is intimidated by him. Whenever he decides anything a single question or comment is enough to make him "give in", be "defeated", or "resigned". When current Mistress (vamp leader) calls him to court a noble a lot younger than he is loudly telling her off calling her a "puta" (slut) to her face while he is full of fear and slapped around. Working together to solve the case of poisoned vampires, the noble walks confidently across a bridge while he is trembly and nauseous. There are constant rumors about him but its seems to be more because of his albino looks and lack of court attendance than because he actually is someone extraordinary and amazing.
