Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Chaikin (Clouds of Glory: Jewish Legends and Stories) culls from a vast library of Jewish Midrash tales and adds her own bit of sparkle to produce this entertaining collection featuring God's legion of angels and their specific duties on Earth and in Heaven. Framing the book, Chaikin explains in an author's note the many links between Heaven and Earth that God has made, including the "Prayer Path," the corridor used when humans speak to God, and the "Palace of Love," the heavenly dwelling place of human souls before birth and after death. Each tale spotlights a different class or type of angel, whether it be the "Angels of Forgetfulness" who erase knowledge from infants' minds at birth, or the "Alphabet Angels," who tend to problems or pleas as designated by letters in the Hebrew alphabet. For example, a Bet angel aids a troubled beekeeper. Young readers will find much to like while riding along with Chaikin's imagining of the lives and jobs of God's messengers. Gore (The Princess Mouse) provides appropriately mystical yet reverent mixed-media illustrations, rendered predominantly in soothing blues, purples and browns. An informative introduction, source notes and references may encourage further reading in this area. Ages 8-12. (Sept.) Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

Gr 4-6-Whereas Clouds of Glory (1998) and Angels Sweep the Desert Floor (2002, both Clarion) retell biblical stories from Genesis and Exodus, this offering retells the legends of how angels work alongside God in both heaven and on Earth. Raziel, Azaz, Kasriel, Ya'asriel, Goralnik, Rafael, and Layla are all introduced along with the Wheel angels, the Angels of Forgetfulness, the Musician angels, Satan, and countless others, making it very difficult for readers to keep track of all of them. Places and concepts like the Prayer Path, the River-of-Angels, the Love Chamber, the Hall of Alphabet Angels, the Evil Urge, and the Leisure Corner of Heaven are also included without enough description or explanation for readers to visualize and comprehend them. The tone of the writing is mystical and mysterious, which may frustrate children who are trying to gain a more concrete understanding of the stories. And, while the artwork at the beginning of each chapter beautifully matches the tone and mood of the book, it fails to help illuminate the text. Finding an appreciative audience for this collection will be difficult-the language and concepts are very sophisticated, yet the format, design, and font size appear suited for much younger readers. Consider only if there is an interest and need for additional collections of midrash.-Rachel Kamin, Temple Israel Libraries & Media Center, West Bloomfield, MI Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
This charming collection of stories is based on Jewish legends that teach that the Holy of Holies created links between Heaven and earth. These links are groups of angels, and what a lot they are. Each group has been given specific tasks to perform on earth, and, as characterized here, angels possess human, relatable feelings and ideas and, yes, sometimes even flaws. Readers will be fascinated and comforted to know that angels apparently feel self-doubt, jealousy, worry, confusion and many other emotions. It will come as no surprise that angels are musical, but who knew they can't dance at all and love to laugh? Their relations with God are warm and wonderful. These are reverential stories that teach gentle, humorous lessons and shed a reassuring light on how connected humans are with the world of the spirit. Gore's soft, delicate paintings glow with light. Includes a note about the stories, an author's introduction and sources and references. (Nonfiction. 9-12)
