Overview

This book is a first-person account of a disaster on a solo hiking trip. Author Amy Racina was hiking in a remote part of King's Canyon National Park in California's Sierra mountains when she lost the trail. With no warning, she suddenly fell sixty feet, breaking both legs on the rocks below. She survived for four days and nights, battling pain, fear and exhaustion, pulling herself along with her hands and refusing to give up. She was miraculously saved, her calls heard by a man who was partially deaf. It ...

She survived for four days and nights, battling pain, fear and exhaustion, pulling herself along with her hands and refusing to give up. She was miraculously saved, her calls heard by a man who was partially deaf. It describes her dramatic rescue as she was airlifted out, swinging helplessly from two straps, dangling fearfully beneath a helicopter high above the ravine where she had fallen.

It is an amazing tale of despair and courage and hope. It speaks of incredible strength and heartbreaking weakness as it details what one woman believed might be the last days of her life. It is a memory of the darkest of times and an affirmation of miracles.

    Both Gripping and Thought Provoking

There are few books that grip me from page one, and Angels In The Wilderness was one of them. Being a lover of survival stories, I was most drawn to this aspect of Amy's story, but what I came away with was a deeper appreciation for, as Alfred Lansing wrote as a dedication in Endurance, 'Whatever it is that makes men accomplish the impossible.' Of course, (wo)men is more appropriate in today's day and age, and Amy's honest, and descriptive prose make it another story that will pass the test of time and be referred to for years as yet another example of an ordinary person accomplishing an extraordinary feat, and living to tell the story.

Angels in the Wilderness Made My Heart Sing

Angels in the Wilderness is a must read for anyone who has ever wondered if life is worth living. It is an incredible, true story of courage and determination against almost impossible odds. In addition to the fantastic tale of adventure and rescue, Ms. Racina offers us a picture of who she is, her life, and her coping strategies. It is a fascinating book. I cried when I read it the first time and had to go back and read it aloud to a disabled friend of mine. Read this book. You will be glad that you did.

    Quite a page turner!

This book drew me in from the very first sentence and for the next couple of days I carried it around, reading passages every spare moment I had until I was done. Not only is the tale of Amy¿s rescue and recovery a riveting story but she just happens to be a very gifted writer who is able to take the reader right through the journey with her. This is not just a story of great courage and determination, but also the way her perspective on life changed. As a very autonomous and independent woman it was not easy for her to be so vulnerable. I loved reading the parts where she discovered how much her community of friends came through for her. I also appreciated Amy¿s descriptions of how she broke enormous undertakings into small, manageable, achievable tasks so that she didn¿t become overwhelmed and paralyzed. It is full of great life lessons. Enjoy it!

    Don't miss!

Amy interweaves personal history, her hair raising accident and recovery, and introspection about the experience into a searingly honest account of one person's spirituality. Impossible to put down. Her accident becomes a lens through which she focuses the value of everyday life. Her revelations are shared with generosity and grace, and celebration of humanity. The book offers a rare window on introversion at its glorious best.
