This new series launch by the author of the "Dark Days" novels revolves around Gage, a warlock and tattoo artist with a knack for getting himself into trouble. Gage escaped from the Ivory Towers, the domain of warlocks and witches, to live a simple but guarded life among humans, trolls, werewolves, and, sometimes, elves. His tattoos are known for their magical effects, but when Gage takes pity on a dying girl and mixes a potion for her tattoo, the consequences are unintended and surprising. Finding himself on the bad side of a grim reaper and with only three days to right his wrong, Gage must call upon past acquaintances to free himself from the grim reaper's hold. VERDICT Gage gets himself into an unbelievable number of bad situations, even by urban fantasy standards. Although piling misfortune upon misfortune creates plenty of fodder for the series, it's sometimes hard for the reader to swallow it all. From the author of the Dark Days series (Bound to Me, 2012, etc.), the first of a new urban-fantasy series centered on tattoo artist Gage Powell. In Asylum, a seedy part of Low Town, assorted strugglers and lowlife humans somewhat uneasily coexist with elves, werewolves, vampires, trolls and other supernatural folk. Above them all are the witches and warlocks in their concealed Ivory Towers; first-person narrator Gage, once a warlock, fled after fighting his mentor, Simon Thorn, when he could no longer stomach their cruelty and arrogance. The Ivory Towers council let him go but assigned a watchdog to ensure that Gage uses his magic only in self-defense. Against this extensive, carefully worked out backdrop, Gage tries to keep his head down and practice his art--which usually involves adding a little magical something to the ink's ingredients--assisted by Trixie, a drop-dead gorgeous elf who conceals her true identity, and Bronx, a hulking, good-natured troll. The plotting, too, is both intricate and well-articulated. Among the problems Gage must deal with: a representative of the local Grim Reaper's union; some armed-to-the-teeth elves enquiring after Trixie; a witch turned into a cat and exiled from the Towers; Simon, intent on killing Gage to further his political agenda; and a very dangerous and dark elf gangster. Stir in a bout of hot sex and some magical battles--the latter, oddly, often devolve into mere physical violence--and it's a shame that the characters remain flat and clichéd, especially dull Bronx and the hissing villain Simon. Still, these are minor issues in what is mostly a distinctive and absorbing tale.

    Lots of fun

    I truly enjoyed this. The short stories (asylum tales) helped to flesh this out. Read them first.

    Good read- looking forward to next installment

    I normally gravitate to books with a female protagonist or a male/female combo with the option of paranormal kinkiness. This book has a male protagonist, and was still quite good. Similar to Jim Butcher novels. Quite a bit of action, magic, paranormal activity, and a little "will-they-won't-they" suspense.

    Loving and hating it.

    I'm finding the story lines and premise is fabulous but I'm bristling at the description of the interactions with the love interest. Everything is so melodramatic and based on appearance. I get it. He loves her boobs and blond hair. What about the rest of her?
    Also, this is coming off as a man has to save the woman type book. So over it.

    I thought this book had potential but ended up being too dark fo

    I thought this book had potential but ended up being too dark for me. It did not have enough light or good to balance out the bad. Even our Hero does things for selfish reasons and not for the good of anyone else really. It just did not follow through.
    Too much language, and darkness and a graphic sex scene totally out of character of the book and not needed in any way.

    Great read!

    I previewed this book months ago for the bookstore I work at (merchandising specialist) and loved it! I used it as a staff pick too. The action starts immediately and keeps on going. I absolutely recommend!

    Urban Fantasy, Very Readable!

    Short-take: Angel's Ink is an urban fantasy novel packed with enough action to keep even the most jaded reader engaged. Gage, the main character, is a partly-trained warlock and fully-trained tattoo artist and potion-stirrer (what a quirky word...stirrer...). He finds himself embedded in trouble and feuds: I like the fact that he becomes aware of the layers and layers of trouble he is in as he tries to clear away the problems he knows he's created. Gage is a persevering kind of character; he brings hope to the reader. This book is enjoyable on many levels: urban, fantasy, romance, mystery. Author Jocelynn Drake really does provide the impetus to keep turning the pages... Caveat: there is some sexually explicit, adult content...

    Good book

    Free friday book.....it was good and I'd read more of Drake's books. Only difficulty that I had....kept forgetting the main char was male! Author may want to work on her masculine voice. :)

    I read this as the Free Friday book and thoroughly enjoyed it. Sure, it is a tiny bit obvious with the renegade good guy and the knock out female (damsel in distress) although she did seem quite feisty, and the good strong friend, but the chemistry came through and the personalities were well fleshed out. Creative uses of various legends and genres, magic, faeries, even vampires and werewolves! I would recommend highly!

    Some of the story lines and characters are a bit cliche, but it was a fun read and over all I enjoyed it. I thought at the end it all came together well. I would read the second one, though I'm not sure if I really want to -pay- to read the second book.

    Great free book!

    Stats: 350-ish nook pages. Paranormal action romance. One rated R sex scene.
    I'm a sci-fi/fantasy lovin' gal who has read Sandman Slim and Dresden Files, but I didn't enjoy them as much as the male/warlock protagonist in this novel. Maybe it was the female author that appealed to me?
