Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Children will have a roaring good time when their eardrums are tickled by the bouncy rhythms of these twelve rollicking riddles. The subjects of each riddle are a musical instrument and an animal. The object of listening is to figure out what animal is playing each instrument. Visual clues are present in the paintings and encourage youngsters to use their imaginations. Subtle clues are also used in the riddles. The fun comes as the riddle is read and the guessing begins. Each animal is revealed by unfolding the page flap to allow the painting to magically transform into an instrument-playing creature. This is an imaginative, read-aloud book that evokes bursts of laughter. A simple extension activity that could be used would be to have children create their own riddles and drawings. This book is part of the "Animagicals" series and is great fun for the price. 1999, Handprint Books, . Ages 3 to 7. Reviewer: Trina Heidt
School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2-Two whimsical books with foldout pages that introduce concepts with the help of rhyming texts and cleverly chosen animals. In the first book, each page introduces a color. Folded, it looks like one thing; unfolded, an animal is revealed. For pink, for example, the page shows a pink bow. Unfold it, and a flamingo appears. The illustrations, using sweeping brush strokes, imaginative placement, and animals full of personality, are clever in the transformation from one object to another. The same technique is used in Music, in which readers see "a camel, with a drum on each hump" or a "bagpipe-playing bullfrog." Both the rhymes and pictures have fun with the similarity in sound or look of the paired instruments and animals. These books are more sophisticated and slightly more demanding than the many other lift-the-flap books that cater to toddlers, which do not have the depth of humor or thought that these two have. A witty pair perfect for lap-time sharing, storytime, or classroom guessing.-Jane Marino, Scarsdale Public Library, NY Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.
