Editorial Reviews

From The Critics
Take a trip on the wild side with this counting book. The setting is a hotel in which a variety of animals perform wild antics! There's two tangoing toucans, six sleep-walking skunks, and ten tigers in tutus. Very bright and entertaining colors will capture the reader's attention. Children will enjoy counting the animals as well as the other objects in the pictures. 2000, Holiday House, Inc., $16.95. Ages 3 mo. to 5. Reviewer: L. Mathison SOURCE: Parent Council Volume 8

Hotel 123 has many guests, including one warthog wearing a wig, four frightened frogs and six sleepwalking skunks. As the rooms fill up with guests, we are treated to very witty and colorful illustrations ideally suited to the very young crowd. The spread for each number has that amount of objects somewhere in the picture. A certain degree of searching is required to find all of them, making this book an interactive/counting experience. It will be a popular book that will be frequently requested. 2000, Holiday House, Ages 1 to 4, $16.95. Reviewer: Kristin Harris—Children's Literature

PreS-A fanciful counting book featuring sleepwalking skunks, singing sheep, and tigers in tutus. As various animals settle into a hotel, they engage in a variety of activities centering on a number from 1 to 10. For example, in room 3, one finds "three thirsty flamingos" having tea. Attentive children will find plenty of additional items or sets of items to count in each room. On every spread, a corresponding number of mice peer out from holes in the wall, finally revealing a busy mouse motel inside it. Flat, cartoon-style illustrations in riotous color combinations match the madcap tone of the book. The electric hues, simple lines, and large shapes make the book especially suited for groups; however, the detail also provides much for one-on-one sharing.- Carolyn Stacey, Jefferson County Public Library, Arvada, CO Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.
