Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Cherie Ilg Haas
Simple text written in short sentences describes how a variety of bugs, mammals, and reptiles in the desert use camouflage to survive. Adorable photos of animals in their habitats, some barely seen because they blend into their backgrounds so well, supplement the writing. Kori bustards, desert tarantulas, camels, and sidewinders (snakes) are some of the examples given, showing the importance of camouflage in finding food. The concepts are kept basic and the layout is reader-friendly with large type, making it a great book for beginning readers. On the same note, it is also perfect for reading out loud to open discussions about the animals themselves. This title is part of the series, "Hidden in Nature Series," that includes Animal Camouflage in the Desert, Animal Camouflage in the Snow, and Animal Camouflage in the Ocean. It includes a table of contents, a glossary, book and web resources, and an index. It would make an excellent addition to any library or classroom. Reviewer: Cherie Ilg Haas
School Library Journal
K-Gr 2–These attractive introductions combine easy-to-read text, well laid out against copious white space (or blue, or green, or yellow, depending on the camouflage) with beautiful full-page color photographs. The photos–the highlight of the volumes–are such effective examples of camouflage that they will provide readers with fun “I Spy” opportunities. Since the series is for emerging readers, it is less thorough than the “Animal Attack and Defense” series (Marshall Cavendish, see above). An excellent choice.
