Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Amie Rose Rotruck
Sometimes the smallest and prettiest animals carry the worlds most deadly defense mechanisms. Some animals eat specific plants, like milkweed, to create poison. Others manufacture the poison within their body. Skunk spray cannot kill an animal but the stench is powerful enough to ward away animals like bears. Most poisonous animals are colorful to warn predators to stay away but in case that does not work, there is an arsenal of chemical weapons various animals can use. The bombardier beetle can actually create an explosive bomb by mixing two chemicals. Still, other sea animals use chemicals just to make themselves slimy enough to wiggle away from a predator or to create a temporary cloud that allows them to escape without detection. Finally, the book puts these chemical weapons into modern context by talking briefly about chemical warfare amongst humans. While the book is well written and the concepts will captivate children, the format is at times distracting and hard to follow as tidbits interrupt the flow of the actual text. Still, this is a fascinating account of nature's protective chemical weapons. Part of the "Amazing Animal Defenses" series. Reviewer: Amie Rose Rotruck
