Gr 2-4-Each book describes 13 animals. At Night includes the nocturnal white rhinoceros, aye-aye, gecko, and luna moth. The subjects of Forest live in northern areas and include the stag beetle, badger, beaver, and crossbill. In both titles, each creature is discussed in a paragraph superimposed on a painting of it in its habitat. A full-page close-up of the head is shown opposite. The text tells what facial features help the animal to find food, defend itself, make its way at night, etc. A section at the back of each book gives additional brief facts, including family and size. Sometimes information in the main entry is repeated in the back matter. The paintings will attract readers; however, the books' premise limits their usefulness.
