School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 3-5-- This beautifully crafted book features short excerpts from classic adult books of animal lore. Pieces by Mannix, Howat, Michener, Caras, and Durrell were selected by the editor of Classics to Read Aloud to Your Children (1984) and its sequel, More Classics . . . (1986, both Crown). Short passages offer youngsters the opportunity to read or listen to fine writing and fascinating details of animal diversity. Great care is exhibited in the book's beautiful design; from scripted print to the full-color illustrations to the glossary boxes that appear wherever they are needed, this book shines. Yet, despite the herculean effort, it seems just a bit too erudite for many children to appreciate. And, with only five excerpts, it is a bit spare to be considered a great anthology. Where Russell's books are often requested or where animal books are in great demand, consider it for purchase. Otherwise, keep Russell's previous anthologies on the shelf (they contain some animal stories) or substitute the individual books by Mowat and Herriott. --Amy Nunley, Toledo-Lucas County Public Library, OH
