Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 6 Up—When Monoko finds a human baby floating down the river by her village, she is overjoyed. Having lost her parents to vicious wildcats, she has felt out of place among her fellow tanuki (raccoon dogs) and longs for a sense of purpose. This baby, however, is no ordinary human baby. He is blessed with the ability to speak to and understand all of the animals in the forest. This comes in handy, especially when he comes face to face with a mysterious wildcat who has decided to dedicate himself to the protection of the tanuki against the ever-present threat of the other wildcats. The story is interesting enough; the violence and crude humor make it appropriate for a mature audience, while the content, which focuses heavily on the mother/baby relationship, may be too childish for teens. The quality of the art is a mixed bag. The cartoonlike tanuki are somewhat strange-looking, while the backgrounds and other animals (fish, wildcats, and the like) are drawn more realistically and with more detail. The volume also includes a short story at the end about the author's dog, which is almost more entertaining than the rest of the book.—Jason M. Poole, Webster Public Library, NY
