School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 3-6Maruska first discusses common characteristics of the Amphibia class, and then presents examples by order and family divisions, describing developmental stages from eggs to embryos to larvae to adults. The final chapter presents a clear picture of rapidly vanishing species due to habitat destruction, the poisoning of waters, and the greenhouse effect. This title is worth purchasing if only for the spectacular, full-color photographs that emphasize appendages, skin textures, stages of development, and camouflage; and show closeups of eyes, nostrils, external eardrums, and fertilization of eggs. Terms included in the glossary appear in script in the main text; a list of conservation organizations is provided. Maynard's book, also illustrated with full-color photos, is an excellent choice for either reference or pleasure reading. Information is given about animals with extraordinary abilities developed through evolution for survival in their habitats, and they are compared to one another as well as to humans. The author's message is that all creatures are different, each having evolved to a special way of life. Glossary terms appear in bold print within the text. Both volumes will have wide appeal.Karen M. Kearns, Environmental Resource Center, Atlanta, GA
