Description: Anyone entering the field of veterinary medicine is required to have an understanding of animal physiology. This is an update of a well-written book on this subject last published in 2008.
Purpose: The main purpose is to help students gain an understanding of contemporary animal physiology and to draw attention to the cutting edge of physiological science. The knowledge shared in this book is of major value to students pursuing careers in biological sciences as veterinarians, professors, or researchers.
Audience: The book is intended for those involved in a field that relates to animal physiology, including veterinarians, researchers, professors, and university students both at undergraduate and graduate levels of study. The authors of this book are all from the academic setting and are established in their respective fields.
Features: Among the topics this book covers are aerobic and anaerobic forms of metabolism, the physiology of breathing, water and salt physiology, and poikilothermy. Of particular interest are the "at work" sections which apply the information discussed directly to how animals function. For example in the part of the book devoted to water, salts, and excretion the "at work" section discusses these topics in mammals living in deserts and dry savannas. This is particularly useful as it presents how all the different physiological mechanisms of the animal body work together to allow the animal to function and survive. There are also many tables, charts, and photographs which are of good quality and easy to comprehend.
Assessment: There are a number of books on animal physiology, but this one is written in a way that is easy to read and comprehend, while at the same time providing appropriate detail.
