Overview

Animal Planet The Most Extreme Animals gets you up close and personal with the wildest animals in the world. Based on the popular Animal Planet television series, this colorful book counts down the top ten animals in some crazy categories, from the most extreme fighters, biters, and stinkers to the most extreme eaters, survivors, and thinkers. In these pages you will discover many amazing creatures, such as: Beautiful Siamese fighting fish, which will battle each other to the death over territory! Leafy sea dragons, which grow amazing seaweed-like projections to blend into their surroundings! The duck-billed platypus, which has a bill like a duck, a tail like a beaver, and poisonous spurs on its back legs! Bombardier beetles, which fend off predators by shooting boiling hot chemicals out of their backsides! Sloths, which hang out for so long in the trees that forests of algae grow in their fur!

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Carolyn Mott Ford
The Animal Planet television shows are popular with those in many age groups and middle graders seem to especially appreciate them. "The Most Extreme" shows follow a countdown format and that approach is also used in "The Most Extreme" series of books. The countdowns are done with attention to detail and many interesting sidebars, some of which include humorous asides. The photographs accompanying the text are awesome. There are twelve chapters counting down extreme animals from ten to one and each chapter is intriguing. In this book about animals, the chapters range from a look at stories of birth and parenting to a realistic assessment of creatures feared by humans. Unless they are quite squeamish, kids will enjoy the chapter about weird-looking body parts, as well as the one about poisons and venoms. The final chapter is titled "Zombie Jamboree," giving a lighthearted title to an eerie subject. An extensive glossary is included, as is a listing of books and websites for further study.
