Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Leona Illig
Animals like the grizzly bear, saltwater crocodile, and wild boar are likely to strike fear into the heart of anyone who has the misfortune of an accidental encounter. This book recounts the true tales of those who met their demise in the jaws of these and other animals, and the grim details are not whitewashed. There are ten discreet sections on different animals that have been known to attack humans. Most sections include a "Fact File" about the animal, a comic-book story about the animal's discovery or aggression toward humans, and a "Did You Know?" feature that focuses on some of the animal's unusual characteristics. A number of things set this book, which is affiliated with the "Animal Planet" television series, apart from other animal/science books. First, the book is told in graphic or comic book format, with illustrations that are stylized or exaggerated, and this helps to relieve the violence that is part of the animal kingdom. Second, the sections do not simply focus on why these animals are dangerous to humans: they also point out that humans can be dangerous to animals, and that the behavior of most animals is determined by evolution and the environment. The book is satisfying as a series of comic stories, but it is also a valuable teaching tool about the nature of wild animals. Science writers would do well to emulate its formula. Girls as well as boys will enjoy this book, since many of the stories involve women. For example, there was the time when the former Miss South Africa went canoeing in the hippo-infested waters of the Okavango Swamp in Botswana. Go ahead and read the story...if you dare.
