Gr 2-5-The introduction in each title immediately piques readers' interest by briefly summarizing the book's four featured animals. A full chapter is then devoted to telling the story of each creature. Readers of Rescuers will be moved by Ginny, a dog with a knack for finding hurt homeless cats; Lulu, a pig that sought help for its owner stricken with a heart attack; Scarlett, a cat that rescued her kittens from a burning building; and Salty, a guide dog that on 9/11 led his owner to safety from the 71st floor of the World Trade Center. The stars of Masterminds are Clever Hans, a horse so adept at picking up cues from humans that he appeared to do math; Alex, a parrot that learned the names of more than 50 objects; Betty, a crow that fashioned a hook out of wire; and chimps with language skills. The authors do an excellent job of introducing new terms. Unfamiliar or difficult words are printed in bold and featured in the glossaries. Often, a word is spelled phonetically following its use or is immediately defined. Full-color photographs nicely enhance the tales. Many of the pictures are of the animals in action (Rescuers includes scenes of the devastation of 9/11 and of Scarlett with facial burns) or show them with their human friends. Ideal for both leisure reading and student use, these titles encourage empathy toward animals.-Cathie Bashaw Morton, Somers Library, NY Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
