Children's Literature - Cathi I. White
Animals cannot speak up for themselves. But yet, they have a right to be treated fairly and humanely. So who is going to speak up and help them? Young people as well as others can take that stand! Twelve-year-old Tim saw how some ducklings were studied in school. Afterward the ducklings were to be returned to the farm to be killed. He couldn't stand by and let this happened so he took action. Through many hours of hard work and many phone calls he found a place that would take care of the ducklings safely. Young people like Tim may choose a cause to help animals in need. They have to focus on the facts of the problem and seek ways to find a solution. Research and good sources help young people to discover the best ways to carry out their plan. By using their talents they can put their plan into action. Getting friends, neighbors, relatives, and senators or congressmen, if necessary, involved can help their cause. Who knows, maybe a new law or rule can be started to help animals such as the one Amanda got for her community in Massachusetts to stop cruel greyhound dog racing. Young people who read this book will be excited to see others who have succeeded and will be encouraged to carry out their own project. Teachers could use this educational book to help start a project in their own classrooms. This book is part of the "Take Action" series. Reviewer: Cathi I. White
