Overview

Formerly half of the now-defunct kid-rock duo Rosenshontz, Bill Shontz has since aimed his consciousness-raising solo work at a grade-school audience. ANIMAL TALES, his first effort sans longtime partner Gary Rosen, takes its cues from Shontz's love and concern for the natural world. But unlike the creators of many ecology-themed children's records, Shontz doesn't use ANIMAL TALES to preach or lecture. Instead, the jovial singer-songwriter (who also blows a muscular sax) composes breezy, informative tunes about fauna both domestic and exotic -- pelicans, platypuses, etc. In the process, Shontz gets his green-themed message across gracefully and, er, naturally, rather than bludgeoning his listeners with it. There are treasures galore on this gorgeously produced album, including the lyrical "Woodland Chorus" and the rollicking "You Are What You Eat." A highlight is the comical epic "Package Man": Shontz deftly lampoons the wasteful overpackaging of consumer goods via convoluted verbiage that recalls no less a wordsmith than A. A. Milne. Bonus goodie is the rousing "Green Up!," with guest vocals from first-rate kids' artists Tom Chapin, Joanie Bartels, Bob McGrath, Tom Paxton, and Don Cooper.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Janet Schnol
Cheers to Shontz's first solo effort. (He is half of the duo Rosenshontz.) Sure to have great audience appeal, there are no simplistic kiddie songs in this top-notch production.
