Overview

Tongues in all shapes, sizes and textures!

This bright, colorful book explores the wild and wonderful variety of tongues in the world’s animals. Discover long tongues, sticky tongues, trick tongues, tube tongues, black tongues, blue tongues, red tongues, fork tongues, spike tongues, brush tongues, straw tongues, smelling tongues, curly tongues, cooling tongues, heating tongues, cleaning tongues, talking tongues, glow-in-the-dark tongues, and so many more.

Snakes and some lizards use their long, flickering tongues to smell predators and prey, while chameleons use the sticky tip of their long, stretchy tongues to catch bugs for dinner. Crocodiles use special glands on their tongues to remove salt from their bodies, while newborn whales and dolphins use small bumps on their tongues to hang on to mom while she swims.

This book also includes fun, easy experiments that illustrate the way animal tongues work, and cool tongue facts to gross out family and friends.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Cherie Ilg Haas
Who would have thought that tongues could be so diverse? This is a great book for discovering the many different types and functions of animal tongues. A large range of animals from all over the world is covered, and vivid color photographs show this muscle at its best. An important thing to note is that in the process of learning how animals use their tongues, young readers likely will learn about their own tongues, by comparing humans to their animal subjects. Although the chapters are short, they are full of incredible information, such as the amazing speed of a lizard's tongue. The writer speaks directly to the reader, asking silly questions such as, "Can you stretch your tongue to your ear?" Cusick provides many simple examples to demonstrate certain points, such as the significance of the rough texture of a kitten's tongue, which is something that many young readers will have felt before. This book includes a glossary and an index. Reviewer: Cherie Ilg Haas

Gr 2–5—Animals' tongues have different colors and shapes; these differences and the reasons for them are explored in Cusick's clearly written, conversational style. Species included range from the everyday dogs and cats to the unusual—blue-tongued skinks and hummingbird moths that can have probosces longer than their bodies. Each animal is introduced on a spread that includes at least two eye-catching, close-up photos that add lots of interest and appeal. Additional text along the bottom of each spread encourages readers to "Test It Out" (conduct a simple activity) or "Guess What?" (consider another interesting fact). This fascinating book concludes with "Tongue Trivia," fascinating information about the tongue-eating louse, the nudibranchs, glow-in-the-dark fung-tongues, and more.—Christine Markley, Washington Elementary School, Barto, PA

I love giraffes, so there was no way I could walk past this book without picking it up. What fun! Adorable and hilarious photographs, plus really fascinating facts about critters of all kinds. Makes me wish I still had a grade-schooler at home. Parents, this would be a WONDERFUL gift to contribute to a classroom or library.

Who'd a thought this subject could be bright, fun, silly, and even interesting? Really a great book for kids.

This book really connects with kids, and the experiments make them think about the material in a different way. I replace it every time it's stolen from my classroom library.
