Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Heidi Hauser Green
Children who are fascinated by the rough side of nature—the long teeth, the sharp claws, the killer instinct—will be thrilled with this book! Here we have the leading carnivorous at their best. After a brief introduction to the concepts of predator, prey, and food chain, as well as a quick look at the earth's many landscapes, this book provides close-ups of some of the fiercest animals around. Each two-page spread features a different animal in full-color photographs and engaging text. Many land-based creatures appear, including a puma, grizzly bear, jaguar, wolverine, leopard, and arctic wolf. Water-based animals such as the killer whale, the Nile crocodile, and the box jellyfish are also here. And let us not forget the lizards (green anaconda, Peringuey's sidewinding adder, green tree frog) or insects (glow worms). Creatures are divided according to the landscape where they live, and readers are cautioned that sometimes animals can be both predator and prey. This slender, photo-heavy book will appeal to many elementary age children. Part of the "Planet Earth" series. Reviewer: Heidi Hauser Green
