Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
The mysteries of how animals communicate are explored in this book from the "Fun Facts" series. Many animals, such as bullfrogs, penguins, and dolphins, communicate by sounds. Other animals use other senses to communicate with each other. Tigers use scent to mark their territory, chimpanzees use body language, honeybees use dance. The most interesting example is that of the knife fish, which can surround itself with an electric field in the water. Each example of animal communication is accompanied by a photograph and a fun fact related to that particular animal. The "Hands On" experiment is one of the most interesting I have ever found for this age group. It involves filling cups with cinnamon or garlic powder, covering the cups with tissue, and making paths that children must follow by using their noses. This book very clearly explains concepts that took scientists years to understand. 2005, Capstone Press, Ages 6 up.
