Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
PreS-K-A simple, repetitive narrative follows five animals through a snowy day during which they are joined by a boy and girl at play. The climactic event is quiet, consisting of the melting of the snow and the discovery of the first blooming snowdrop to signal spring. The flat, static text has the sound of the primers prevalent in the decades of Brown's lifetime. Apparently never before published, the story lacks the appeal of some of her more enduring works. Framed white blocks of text are set on double-spread gouache paintings that tend to be pretty but also a bit precious. With its greeting-card cute pictures of the children and animals, this book might serve as a seasonal piece for nursery schools and kindergartens, and the brief, mundane sentences are accessible to early independent readers.Margaret Bush, Simmons College, Boston
