Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Barbara L. Talcroft
From France comes this visually sophisticated picture book and activity packet for young readers who are exploring the natural world in their neighborhoods or backyards. (A few creatures, like badgers and storks, will not be seen in our backyards, but their presence can lead to more research.) One can imagine a leisurely walk with a parent, taking time to stop and observe birds and animals, then coming home to enjoy the charming watercolor illustrations in autumn colors of burnt orange, greens, and browns. After reading about underground homes like mole tunnels and burrows for rabbits and foxes, nests for birds (including unusual ones like those of the tree martin and the long-tailed titmouse), water dens, and shell houses (for turtles, snails. and hermit crabs), young nature-lovers can open the packet behind the front cover. Inside are two posters depicting child-like habitats—a tree for birds and their nests, a forest for mammals—and stickers to add as appropriate or to experiment with. A take-apart puzzle lets readers assemble a mole labyrinth and then help the moles through the maze. This beautifully designed and informative picture book can be read, listened to with an adult, or shared many times with a friend along with the sticker and puzzle activities. The author offers good advice to habitat explorers: "Animal homes are delicate and precious. If you find one, leave it alone. Every animal has a right to its own hiding place."
