Animals need to move fast to get their food and often to escape from danger. A mouse may be tiny, but it is able to move very quickly. Ostriches are big birds; too big to fly, but they can run as fast as a horse. Bobcats hunt rabbits and both are quick. Rabbits communicate with each other by thumping on the ground when danger is near. Cheetahs, of course, are the fastest land animal, but they can only maintain their great speed for a short interval. These and a few other animals are all presented in the final spread of this nonfiction reader that also shows kids where in the world each of the animals is found. Part of the "Green Light Nonfiction" series, level 2, grades 1-3. 2000, Harcourt, Ages 6 to 8, $10.95. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot

Gr 1-2-An introduction to a variety of fast-moving animals such as wild horses, ostriches, rabbits, bobcats, and cheetahs. The text is presented in a large, easy-to-read type that makes it appropriate for newly independent readers. However, the use of simple language limits the amount of information that can be presented, and the oversimplification can sometimes be misleading. For example, the text states that, "A mouse is little, but it's quick! Animals must be quick to catch things to eat." This makes it sound as though mice run to catch food, when in fact they're usually running to avoid being caught by a predator. An unlabeled map featuring pictures of the animals superimposed on their respective continents is also somewhat vague as it's often unclear just where these creatures live. The single- or double-page color pictures of the animals in motion are framed and appear flat and stiff. There's not enough factual material for kids working on reports, and the book is not compelling enough to make for interesting browsing. Many better books serve the same purpose.-Arwen Marshall, formerly at New York Public Library Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.
