Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This book explains how certain animals keep their offspring safe in the wild and other cool facts. How long does a baby kangaroo stay in its mother's pouch? What does a meerkat look like and where do they live? Are females the only caregivers or do the males play a big role in raising the young? Which animals cling to its mother for up to eight years? Do all birds protect their babies the same? Would you like it if your mother chewed your food first and then gave it to you like the wolves do? Read and discover even more fascinating facts. The outstanding photographs extend the text and show a more complete picture of life in the wild. The clear and precise index at the front can help anyone to find where they want to go, quick and easy. The book is supposed to be a reference book on first facts for a young audience. I felt the sentence length sometimes did not seem appropriate for this age. Of course, the simple text helps, and the glossary gives meaning and pronunciation to unknown words so the reader can still enjoy and learn from this book. Check out page 21 and experiment with scents and see if you can sniff out certain smells. This reference book does not come cheap, but the information lasts a lifetime. Part of the "First Facts: Animal Behavior" series. 2004, Capstone Stone Press, Ages 6 to 8.
