Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Dianne Ochiltree
Artists see the world in patterns, colors, textures, lines and shapes, which inspire them to create worlds of their own imagining. This entertaining and educational hardcover book focuses on how artists see animals. The works of famous artists--from varying cultures and eras--are used as a jumping-off point for discussion of tools, styles and techniques. A related art project is included for young readers to try on their own. The projects use easily obtainable items, and directions are easy to follow. Color photographs and line diagrams give aspiring artists additional guidance in creating their own masterpieces. There's also a helpful glossary of art terms at the back of the book. A great introduction to some of the world's greatest artists for home, school or library. Part of the "Start With Art" series.
School Library Journal
Gr 2-5-These entries effectively fulfill the series' goal to offer an understanding of art "with lots of practical step-by-step projects for the young artist." Each spread features a project with clear instructions-both visual and written-and a list of materials needed; it also highlights a work of art in a particular style or medium. In Animals, drawing realistic horses is accomplished with a number of geometric shapes and is illustrated by George Stubbs's 1771 painting, Horse and Rider. While Picasso used plaster, wood, and clay to make his Goat, children are instructed to make their own model using cardboard, tape, and foil. In People various art forms including collage, caricatures, carvings, mosaics, and abstracts represent the paintings of such well-known artists as Picasso, Monet, Degas, and van Gogh. The format is appealing and colorful. Even if readers do not pursue the artistic techniques, they'll still learn much about the masters and their work.-Patricia Mahoney Brown, Benjamin Franklin Elementary School, Kenmore, NY Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.
