Overview

New York Times Best-Selling author Laurell K. Hamilton offers readers a brand new experience in the world of Anita Blake! Fusing mythology, werewolves and vampires with a story loaded with mystery, action and romance, the Anita Blake novels take place in a world where vampires, werewolves, and other creatures of nightmare have been declared legal citizens of the United States. Anita Blake is an "animator" - a profession that involves raising the dead for a living. Anita Blake is also known as a fearsome hunter of criminal vampires, and she moonlights by investigating cases that are far too much for "conventional" police. But as Anita gains the attention of the vampire masters in her hometown of St. Louis, she also risks revealing an intriguing secret about herself - the source of her unusual strength and power.

As a special treat, Anita Blake fans will also discover an original side story featuring Anita and Dolph, written specially for the hardcover edition by Laurell K. Hamilton.

Collects Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter: Guilty Pleasures #1-6.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal

Suckers for vampires will find Marvel's adaptation a satisfying rendering of the Hamilton novel. Numerous details from the book turn up faithfully: Anita's stuffed penguins, Jean-Claude's blue eyes, and the same feel of overheated rottenness. Someone is killing St. Louis vampires, which is murder since vampires are now legal U.S. citizens, and the vamps want Anita to find the killer. No friend of fangs, Anita raises the dead for a living and kills criminal vampires as a sideline, but loyalty to a friend convinces her to take the case. Now she's in for wererats, ghoul attacks, vampire "freak" (swinger) parties, and too many encounters with nymphet vampire queen Nikolaos, plus a parade of gorgeous men (some human, some vampire), all trying too hard to be friendly. Interwoven for intellectuals are fascinating pseudoanthropological details about what a modern society with "real" vampires, ghouls, zombies, and werebeings might be like. The color artwork blends standard DC Comics/Marvel realism with a shojo manga swirl, especially with the bishonenmen. No nudity or explicitness, but the heavy sexual vibe and later direction of the Anita Blake stories make this best for adult collections.

What People are saying about this

Charlaine Harris
From the author of Grave Surprise and other mysteries:
The first book in Hamilton's long-running Anita Blake series, Guilty Pleasures, sets the tone for the whole bestselling line.... Laurell's trademark recklessness, imagination, and storytelling grip you by the scruff of the neck and never let you go.
P. N. Elrod
You'll want to read it in one sitting -- I did.
Andre Norton
I was enthralled -- a departure from the usual type of vampire tale which will have a wide appeal to a reader hunting for both chills and fun.

(This review is both for Volume 1 and Volume 2) I read Guilty Pleasures many years ago and absolutely loved it. It's the first true adult series that I read and loved - at least until it became more about the sex scenes than the mystery, but that's another story. These two volumes stick very closely to the novel and is essentially just these artists interpenetration and visualizations of the novel. The artwork is detailed and eye catching, allowing yourself to really be pulled into the story. My problem with graphic novels is simply that: my problem. They don't have enough depth for me to really be pulled into the story. While these volumes encompass the main aspects of Guilty Pleasures, I don't get the depth and back story of these characters that I really enjoy and felt was missing. But again, that's my issue with graphic novels as a whole and not necessarily with these two volumes. If you are a fan of graphic novels and have yet to read Guilty Pleasures, or you're already a fan of the novel and enjoy graphic novels, these volumes are definitely something worth checking out!

Found this one like the first book in the series, to be okay. Somewhat good but okay. And the art was weird at times.

A friend introduced me to Laurell K. Hamilton, and I'm glad she did. I've read some of the novels, but had never picked up one of the graphic novels...until now. I plan on picking up more.

I thoroughly enjoyed Volume 1 and 2 but I was a little surprised to find that it took two volumes to get the story in. I shouldn't be, Hamilton packs a lot into her books. Still, I felt like what I saw in my head while I read was playing out on the page. Anita's personality was captured in the graphic novel and the story line was accurate. I am looking forward to future installments. Keep them coming!
