Overview

After spending three years in the English world, Anna Beiler has come home. She brings with her a baby girl, which will surely cause a stir since Anna is unmarried. She is also hiding secrets: The baby is not hers by birth, nor does Anna intend to stay. Rather, she desperately needs sanctuary from the child’s violent father...
It surprises Anna how quickly her Amish habits return to her and how satisfying it feels to reconnect with her father, her sister Leah, and her brother Joseph. Even Anna’s childhood friend Samuel, whose slow, thoughtful manner used to frustrate her, becomes a fond and reassuring companion. But Anna hasn’t fully faced the consequences of her irresponsible youth, when her behavior led to a tragic accident. And now her mere presence may endanger the family she holds dear. How easy it is to return to the safe and familiar community whose blessings she once took for granted. But if she wants to stay, Anna must seek forgiveness and experience the true change of heart required to make a new beginning.

This is the third book in Marta Perry's Pleasant Valley series about Anna who has come back to her Amish family after spending 3 years in the English world. She comes back to Pleasant Valley to hide her daughter Grace from his birth father. Great story about how Anna deals with her return, her love for Grace, and the lure of the English world. Although this is part of the Pleasant Valley series, you can read one without reading the others. It was great to see the previous books' characters in this as well and to see what has happened in their lives since their story or the previous book. To understand all of the characters better, you should read the other books. I like how Marta Perry introduces the next book's character in the previous book.

Another fabulous Marta Perry novel. If you love Amish romance novels, this is for you. This is part of a series called Pleasant Valley, but Marta writes these so they can stand alone, you don't need to read them in order but once you read one, you will be hooked too and want all of them. That's what happened to me, I read the fifth one first, "Katie's Way" and then ordered all the rest immediately! I hope Marta Perry never stops writing Amish novels!

I enjoyed this story that is the third in a series. I didn't realize that and hadn't read the first two, but had no trouble understanding what was going on. This is the story of an Amish girl (Anna) that returns to her Amish family after three years away. Anna arrives with a baby and a bit of a mystery. I've visited Amish communities in Pennsylvania and Illinois and am intrigued by the Amish lifestyle, so a good read about them is always fun for me.

Three years ago Anna Beiler left her Amish home in Pleasant Valley, Pennsylvania to live with the English. However, when she comes home she doesn't return alone. Instead she is accompanied by an under one year old baby, Gracie who she claims as her daughter. The Plain People are stunned that unmarried Anna had a child out of wedlock and some want to shun her. She conceals from everyone even her loved ones that the baby is not hers; she took the infant after her friend Janni, the child's mother died, to keep the little girl safe from her abusive father Pete. Anna prays that hiding amongst the Plain folks will keep the baby safe., but fears what she might bring upon her family as she moves in with her brother Joseph and his wife Myra and is welcomed by her father, her sister Leah (see Leah's Choice) and her brother-in-law and his family. Anna also finds herself attracted Joseph's machine shop partner, Samuel Fisher, who seemed like slow learner to her as a child but now she appreciates that he is not simple but a reflective thinker. As she feels welcomed and her baby accepted, Anna looks back at her reckless behavior praying that her community will forgive her. The third Pleasant Valley Amish romance (see Rachel's Garden) is an interesting look at a young woman who left but has come back apparently tainted. Although Samuel and the lead female protagonist's family and community play major roles and Gracie's father a minor but key part, the title is accurate as this is clearly Anna's Return. She holds the well written entertaining story line together as Marta Perry provides a charming second chance at life romance with a bit of late suspense. Harriet Klausner
