Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Since the original Dutch publication of Diary of a Young Girl in 1947, Anne Frank has become an international symbol, variously representing the innocence of youth, the fate of Jewish children under Nazi persecution, and hope and faith in the face of hatred (``In spite of everything I still believe that people are really good at heart''). With its combination of family photographs (many reproduced here for the first time), biographical sketches of Anne Frank and the others in the ``Secret Annex,'' and brief essays identifying specific stages of the Holocaust, this astonishing book moves past symbolism to disentangle the real Anne Frank from mythography. Van der Rol and Verhoeven, who work at the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam, focus sharply on the facts about Anne Frank's life--and death. They document the Frank family's odyssey from Germany to Holland, locate a farewell postcard Anne sent just before going into hiding, display Anne's roughly written diary entries, and quote those who saw her before she died in Bergen Belsen. Sidebars and interpolated passages set her experiences against a broader historical backdrop, explaining major developments of WW II with maps and photographs as well as text. They also discuss the general issue of Jews' going into hiding in Holland: photographs of very cramped hiding places contrast with pictures and maps showing the Franks' relatively spacious quarters; children are shown going into hiding without their parents; a receipt indicates bounty paid to someone who turned Jews over to the Nazis. A superb exploration of the particular and the universal meanings of a seminal work. BOMC selection. Ages 10-up. (Sept.)
School Library Journal
Gr 5 Up-Anyone who has been touched by Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl will be moved by this account that opens on the day Anne received the journal for her 13th birthday. The color photo of the diary set opposite the text lends immediacy and a sense of reality to the commentary. The feelings are reinforced throughout by the authors' prodigious research and the accumulation of details through the photographs. Some of the pictures included have never been published before, and their lengthy captions describe not only who is in the photos, but also the circumstances under which they were taken. Framed pages expand on the political and economical situations of the time. The well-written main narrative, which uses aptly chosen quotations from the diary, takes readers from Anne's normal, happy childhood through the years in the Secret Annex to the betrayal and Anne's death from typhus in Bergen-Belsen just months before her 16th birthday and only weeks before the liberation of the camp. For readers the loss is double. One feels the personal loss of a bright, fun-loving, and talented individual who might have made a difference in the world and also remembers that many Anne Franks died during that nightmarish period.- Amy Kellman, The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh

    more from this reviewer

excellent for kids and adults alike

Beyond the Diary is an easy to ready book with interesting pictures of Anne and her family and friends. The descriptions of the pictures are detailed and, in chronological order, lead up to the arrest of the Frank family. If one has not read Anne Frank's diary, this is a good place to start for a great introduction into the short life of Anne Frank.

    Anne Frank changed my world!!!!!!!

Anne Frank Beyond the Diary is excellent. There are scary, funny, bad, and serious parts all in this one book. My favorite part of the book was when Annes's boyfriend Peter was bitten by a rat, because I thought it was the only intense scene in the book. I thought this scene was kind of funny. The book also deals with racisism, like when the Natzis came and attacked the jews and messed up the Jews' homes and stores.

    a great book

Annne Frank Beyond The Diary is not just about Anne Frank, it is also about World War 2. The book takes place in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Anne Frank gets a diary for her birthday. She went into hiding in the secret annex, a small room, because the nazis were persicuting jews. I won't tell you any more because I do not want to give it away. It is a great book with lots of pictures and captions.

    Very Sad And Emotional

Anne Frank: Beyond the Diary is a book about Anne's life before and when she went into hiding. In the beginning of the book it tells about when Anne was born. There are a lot of pictures of Anne's childhood that catch the reader's eye as they go along. My opinion on this book is that it is very sad and dramatic, but a lot of suprises in between. I recommend this book for drama readers and people who like to read biographies about people during World War 2.

    Anne Frank is GREAT!!!!

Anne Frank was a young Dutch girl who lived while Hitler took over Germany. This book is mostly about how Anne and her family went into hiding while the Nazi's searched all over Germany for Jews. If the Jews were caught, they would go to consentration camps. Consentration camps are places were teh Nazi's would keep Jew were they would work and then mabyee get killed. The book starts out with the Frank family living normal lives but Hitler came to power. The Franks knew that they couldn't stay in the house that they had been living in. They had to leave. The Frank family was very luckybecause they had some friends that were willing to risk their lives by hiding the Frank family in their house. Durin this time that the Frank family stayed in the 'Secret Annex,' Anne had a diary that she got for her thirteenth birthday. She wrote all of these facts from this book in her diary. That's how we know about them today. In the home that the helpers lived in was a bookcase, and behind that bookcase was the secret annex where the Franks would stay. Right when the Franks got into the secret room, they made curtains to block any visibility from the windows. The room was very dirty and dusty. Sometimes it was hard to breathe. This was a very hard time for the Frank family. I'm not going to tell any more because that would spoil it. I enjoyed this book because it was very exciting and sad. I woul recommend this book if you like books that are filled with suspense and tragic events. This book was definetly worth reading.

    A sad but Great story

The book Anne Frankis about a girl who is trying to escape the Nazi's and trying to live through the Holocaust. Anne and her family is in hiding because the Nazi's where invading the Netherlands where they live and it is not safe for a family of Jews to stay out in the open, if they did the Nazi s would take them away to a concentration camp. Well, one day the Nazi's found Anne and took her to a concentration camp when she was 13 and died because of a terrible disease when she was 15. I liked this book and I highly recomend it for people enjoy reading about history and depressing storys'. IT WAS GREAT!!!!! :-) [smile]

    Alot of good lessons

I loved this book because it teaches alot about a life that not many people are familiar with. I relates so well to teens because it was written by a teen. I was told about the book but I didn't want to read it because I thought that it would be stupid. BOY WAS I WRONG!!! My stepmom tried to gat me to read it when I was younger but I didn't want to nad I didn't think it would be that interesting. I was looking for a book to read at home and came across a book that I have only heard about. I decided to read a little bit of it and as soon as I started to read I realized how hard it was for me to put it back on the shelf. It is a fabulous story and will touch so many people if they just give it a chance. I did. I would recemend this book to everyone.
