Editorial Reviews

This anthology of essays on Anne Frank begins with an introduction to her life and the impact of her famous diary. Authors, scholars, journalists and others then examine her contribution to history, under the general headings "In Hiding," "Arrest and Annihilation," "Anne Frank, the Writer," and "Anne Frank's Legacy." Some examples: a Dutch filmmaker offers an interview with a woman who knew Anne during her final months; writer Cynthia Ozick discusses how Anne's father edited the diary and maintains that Anne has been exploited and converted into "usable goods"; German writer Mirjam Pressler considers Anne's talent as an author. Each essay (reprinted from books or magazines) is prefaced by a paragraph or two giving the writer's credentials and helpfully summarizing its content for the reader. Appended are discussion questions and documents, as well as a chronology. This is a valuable compilation for serious students of Anne Frank and the Holocaust. (People Who Made History). KLIATT Codes: SA-Recommended for senior high school students, advanced students, and adults. 2003, Greenhaven, 218p. bibliog. illus. map. index., Ages 15 to adult.
