    Annie and the Old One

Annie is a Navajo Indian who lives on the desert. Everyday ¿she walked to the bus stop and waited for the yellow bus that took her to school and brought her home again.¿ When she got home her grandmother would tell her ¿stories of times long ago.¿ She loved to listen to her grandmothers stories and spend time with her. She watched her mother as she makes a rug on the loom. Annie¿s grandmother somehow knew that she was going to ¿go to Mother Earth when the rug is taken from the loom.¿ Annie got in trouble at school in hopes that her mother and father would have to come to school. This way her mother wouldn¿t be working on the rug for a whole day and her grandmother would have one more day to be with Annie. How does Annie¿s grandmother know when she will go to Mother Earth? Annie¿s mom says, ¿Those Old Ones know.¿ This book is a great book that teaches how to communicate feelings and understand death. Miska Miles is a pseudonym for author. Patricia Miles Martin published books under Miska Miles, Patricia A. Miles and Jerry Lane. She was born on November 14, 1899 in Cherokee, Kansas. She graduated from the University of Wyoming and became an elementary school teacher before she began her writing career. Miles, Miska. Annie and the Old One. New York: Little, Brown Young Readers, 1985.

    A Great Story

'Annie and the Old One' is a unforgettabl story by Miska Miles. This 1972 Newberry Honor Medal did a great job of showing how a girl conquered the fear of death and how she tried to change the way things were done. I love in the end where she realizes what she has to do and that her grandmother will be apart of her now and forever. I think kids need to read this story to realize somethings just have to happen and you can't help it.
