Many years ago, this was the first of many, many books that I would read by Dorothy Garlock. This is the one that started it for me! Ms. Garlock writes in a way that masterfully pulls the reader into the story and makes you feel a part of the book! The story begins when a young woman, Annie Lash, is forced to leave late 1700's St. Louis, along the way she learns to deal with the wilderness and finally reaches a homestead in the middle of it all! How she does this and what happens then is just so well written! Ms. Garlock is just magnificent in her writing! I have all of her books with the exception of the ones out of print! They are very hard to find! Once you start reading it, you won't be able to put it down! I can't, each of the many times I have read and reread each of her books! Happy reading!!!!

very highly recommended for any age readers.

One of the best early american river life book's I ever read. I would recamend it for anyone that is interested in the early life in of America. It grabs you when you open the book. You don't want to lay it down until you are finished. You don't want the story to end. I read all of Dorothy Garlock's I can get my hand's on. I have never been dissapointer yet.
