    Guest Star Glut

Earl Scruggs was THE pioneer of the banjo but you would never know it from these two mid Seventies all stars sessions marking his 25th year with Columbia Records. Earl seldom gets a chance to strut his stuff. There are guest stars too numerous to list (Billy Joel, Roger McGuinn, The Pointer Sisters, etc.) from all genres of music. Except for Johnny Cash, they clutter up the songs. Probably because Johnny and Earl were contemporaries, the numbers Cash sing on are highlights. It isn’t a bed set, it just could have been better. Earl’s last recording at the Ryman on Rounder shows what he and his sons could do, and it was recorded over 30 years later!
