Editorial Reviews

L. William Cashdollar
This book is a collection of short review articles dealing with widely diverse areas of microbiology that are of current interest. Although not clearly stated by the author in the preface, the purpose is to provide current information on various areas of microbiology in the form of short review articles. This type of book is needed to help researchers and educators stay current with the ever expanding volume of information in the current literature. The book is written for research scientists, educators, and students interested in microbiology. The authors of the individual articles are credible in their field, and the collection of authors of the review are respected, well-known scientists. The annual review is published in a manner so as to be as economical as possible. As a result, the number of illustrations is minimal and the paper quality is not of the high gloss variety. The references appear to be current and complete, a feature that is critical for a review article. I recommend this for university and college libraries where microbiology is taught and where microbiological research is being conducted.
Eugene M. Muller
The book is the 50th volume in the Annual Review of Microbiology series. It contains 27 monographs that are not only timely reviews of subjects spanning the diversity of microbiology, but also honor 50 years of success of this review series. The purpose is to offer a synopsis of the current knowledge in each of the subjects that were chosen by the editors of the volume to present a needed update in those areas. These reviews were prepared for researchers in academia, industry, and medicine. They will also be of great interest to physicians interested in the changing nature of infectious diseases, and instructors of graduate level courses who are seeking current information to update their class materials and to serve as additional readings and sources of journal club materials for their advanced students. This volume contains separate review articles; each is current and well written. Regardless of their particular area of interest, microbiologists will find themselves immediately drawn to several articles as they examine this volume. Those same readers will find themselves subsequently returning to read several other reviews to fulfill their curiosity regarding areas that are outside of their specialty, but are of great value to those trying to keep abreast with the rapid developments in contemporary science. This volume will be a useful addition to the private libraries of microbiologists and to those serving scientists in the private sector. For libraries serving the academic community, this volume, one of the most useful publications of microbiological literature, will be a necessary addition to their collection.
