Reviewer: David J. Dries, MD (University of Minnesota Medical School)
Description: This is one of a series of updates based on the Multidisciplinary Conference in Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine held in Brussels. It represents a continuation of the series, Yearbook of Intensive Care Medicine in Europe and Intensive Care Medicine: Annual Update in the United States.
Purpose: It is a series of presentations representing recent research developments in the specialties involved in acute medical care.
Audience: Senior trainees and practitioners are the intended audience.
Features: A variety of emergency topics are covered, including a discussion of the new subspecialty of event medicine and care strategies in cardiac arrest. Pulmonary reviews include recent work in ventilator-associated pneumonia, high frequency ventilation, extracorporeal gas exchange, and heart/lung interaction. Hemodynamic monitoring and management also is emphasized with a review of goal-directed therapy and pharmacological strategies for acute heart failure. Fluid management options with associated end organ complications are reviewed. Topics in sepsis include antimicrobials, recent epidemiological data, and optimal supportive therapies. A final large group of chapters relate to monitoring of biochemical changes, lung mechanics, and neurological function. Chapters are clearly written and include ample reference lists with primary citations dating to within one year of publication. Excellent use is made of tables and line drawings. A table of contents groups presentations and lists authors, while the subject index provides adequate access to the wide range of topics presented.
Assessment: This book represents a comprehensive overview of recent thinking in the management of critically ill patients. It is most valuable for senior trainees or practitioners. It does not replace a well-written textbook, but this book's consistent use of experts and the currency of its presentations complement a textbook or other tool well.
