Description: The book presents a pragmatic approach to helping someone who is suffering from eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa and bulimia. The first edition was published in 1988.
Purpose: According to the authors, "a helper needs to know how to talk to a sufferer in a way that is likely to be constructive rather than exacerbate his or her problem, and we illustrate ways in which this may be achieved." The book meets these worthy objectives.
Audience: According to the authors, "this book is for anyone who wants to help a person who is anorexic or bulimic, and sufferers will also find it valuable." The book is useful for family members of one suffering from eating disorders, or it can be used as a self-help book. The book can also be used as an introduction to eating disorders in graduate courses. The authors are credible authorities, each having over 30 years' experience in treating individuals with eating disorders.
Features: The book covers both theory and practice. It is based on the "starvation whirlpool theory," which involves diminished mental capacity, biological changes, and compulsive behavioral traits. It covers thoroughly control and shows how the helper and sufferer can work together.
Assessment: This book is useful because it contains pertinent information and is easy to read. I was surprised at the lack of references in general, and of those, very few were recent ones. This may be due to the fact that the book is written with the general public in mind as opposed to students and/or clinicians. The second edition is justified because there has been much research in the 15 years since the first edition. However, much of the newer research does not seem to have been included.
