Harry goes off to war. His new bride, Martha, has their baby alone after he's reported missing and presumed dead. She gives the baby up for adoption. Then, you guessed it, he's found alive but wounded. Harry is bitter, Martha feels guilty. They have another child, Joel, but never make a happy home. This drags on for hundreds of depressing pages. Meanwhile, the daughter they gave away, Kyle, is dealing with a wealthy but evil adoptive mother who is ruining her life. The authors visit several stages of the characters' lives without telling anything interesting. Martha's character is never developed at all. And the authors pause from the story several times to hit the reader over the head with long sermons. A well-written Christian novel will weave inspiration into the saga through the characters without lengthy preaching. The book eventually becomes interesting, as Kyle finds her birth family and as her birth brother, Joel, deals with his struggles. Then the book ends abruptly. Leaving loose ends would be fine if the story ends with a cliffhanger to set the stage for the sequel. But this didn't even do that. Definitely not Janette Oke's best work. She writes better without a co-author. I'll be skipping the sequel.
I think Janette Oke works way better by herself. Most of the books she co-authers are rather dull and drag on and on.
