Fictional & yet I felt like I was reading about real people. The characters were so believable, the emotions so strong. The author explores what happens to the survivors of war, the foibles of ordinary people, & the indomitable spirit of people to overcome even the most horrendous adversity, especially when guided by an underlying love. It's not maudlin, not sappy, & in many ways unexpected.

Don't find many novels set in Bosnia/Serbia war. Had to find map to keep it straight. Love/war/coming of age. Good read.
