Barnes & Noble - Mark Schwartz
While there's a surfeit of down-tempo lounge mixes out there, the new series Another Late Night -- a cousin of the popular Back to Mine -- debuts with this session from Fila Brazillia and proves more substantial than your average audio cocktail. The premise: Get the top underground producers to craft autobiographical sets that spotlight their influences, making these slow jams double as extrapersonal history lessons. For Steve Cobby and Dave McSherry, the Englishmen from Hull who call themselves Fila Brazillia, it's an occasion to show off the vast range of their record collections. Dub is the field in which these boys excel, and in between that deep groove music's feathery highs and murky lows is a vast territory. They find some genuinely odd tracks -- classico-jazz anomalies the Swingle Singers, for example -- and some after-hours standards, such as Marvin Gaye's ubiquitous "T Plays It Cool," and they mix in more current urban beats from above Virgin Records soulchild Kelis and below Ninja Tune rappers Infesticons the radar of rap and R&B radio. An uncharacteristically weak Prince Alla cut, "Bucket Bottom," is the duo's only wrong move, but they follow it up with Mr. Scruff's "Get a Move On" from Keep It Unreal -- hands-down the set's winner, it's an Amon Tobin-style jazz cut 'n' paste that perfectly sums up the series' wee-hours feel. A close second, and also on the jazz tip, is Fila Brazillia's version of the standard "Nature Boy," bedecked in a junglist beat with a dreamy vibraphone melody line. Sometimes the best part of a night out is going home, and with Another Late Night, that prospect just got even better.
All Music Guide - Dean Carlson
Mixing obscure brain funk with the erogenous pulse of jazz, soul, and left-field electronic chamber pop, Fila Brazillia's first attempt at a mix album is one of the most enjoyably indiscriminate chill-out compilations in some time. New York's Kinetic label, best known for its Tranceport franchise, was wise to let Fila Brazillia's Steve Cobby and Dave Pork step in and kick off their new Another Late Night series. The duo's liking for accessible, caricature-based, mischievous downtempo blends well in this mix environment, where the freedom to place elements like Prince Alla's roots reggae, the Swingle Singers' "Prelude and Fugue in C minor," and the stoic lunacy of the Beta Band in the same arena as Kelis and Marvin Gaye goes unchallenged. It's both an excellent introduction to the band's idiosyncrasies and a tacit triumph of naked eclecticism in its own right.

    A Road CD

I bought this CD for track #5 from the Lincoln ads. Then I discovered track #6 which is also a nice beat.
