Overview

ANSEL ADAMS: 400 PHOTOGRAPHS presents the full spectrum of Adams' work in a single volume for the first time, offering the largest available compilation from his legendary photographic career. Beautifully produced and presented in an attractive landscape trim, ANSEL ADAMS: 400 PHOTOGRAPHS will appeal to a general gift-book audience as well as Adams' legions of dedicated fans and students.

The photographs are arranged chronologically into five major periods, from his first photographs made in Yosemite and the High Sierra in 1916 to his work in the National Parks in the 1940s up to his last important photographs from the 1960s. An introduction and brief essays on selected images provide information aboutAdams' life, document the evolution of his technique, and give voice to his artistic vision.

Few artists of any era can claim to have produced four hundred images of lasting beauty and significance. It is a testament to Adams' vision and lifetime of hard work that a book of this scale can be compiled. ANSEL ADAMS: 400 PHOTOGRAPHS is a must-have for anyone who appreciates photography and the allure of the natural world.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

In his later years, photographer Ansel Adams (1902-1984) lamented to a friend, "I know I shall be castigated by a large group of people today, but I was trained to assume that art related to the elusive quality of beauty and that the purpose of art was concerned with the elevation of the spirit (horrible Victorian notion!!)" Despite such qualms, viewers still flock to Adams exhibits; indeed, it can be argued that his black-and-white images of the West are perhaps the most beloved American pictures. Andrea Stillman's Ansel Adams: 400 Photographs does what previous editors could have only dreamed of: It presents the full spectrum of his lifework in a single volume; from his first photographs in Yosemite to his stunning final wilderness landscapes. The photography book of the season; now in trade paperback.

Most of the classic shots, plus a eye-opening range of others that show Adam's overall skill

There are many ways this book could be improved - the text is weak, short and fawning. And arranging all the pics in pure chronological would be appreciated. But then again the images are so stunning that those details fall by the wayside. The majority of Ansel's iconic shots can be found here, but the real reason to get this book are the dozens of other shots that in any other photographer's book would be their icon shots. I was suprised by the range of excellent shots found here. Take a look.

    Stunning

Amazing collection of Ansel Adam's work. I just got this book and I know I will enjoy it for years to come. It's great to pick it up and flip through the pages of beautiful photos and just get lost in the scenery. Definitely inpsires me to go out and enjoy the natural word and attempt some photography of my own!
