All Music Guide - William Ruhlmann
Director and co-screenwriter Matthew Luetwyler's Answers to Nothing is an ensemble drama that follows the interlocking lives of half a dozen characters related to the kidnapping of a child. Composer Craig Richey is faced with the twin challenges of underlying the characters' difficulties and interacting with the pop songs also included in the film, nine of which turn up with his music cues on the soundtrack album, including four by rock band Nico Vega, who also appear onscreen.
His response is to let the pop music handle the energetic aspects of the picture and to support the troubling, more contemplative moments with the abbreviated tracks of his own music. Thus, for instance, "Jerry's Beat" is a calm piano theme with echoing strings that create an ambient mood, while "Just a Handshake" is a delicate acoustic guitar theme with a piano entering late. Richey gets a little more lively later in his score, with "Hard Time in a Cold Room" boasting a playful jazz tone in the manner of Henry Mancini and "On the Perpetrator's Porch" introducing jagged guitar notes for a disquieting effect. But that's nothing compared with the singer/songwriter indie rock of Nico Vega on the raucous and explicit "The Beast" and the downtempo ballad "Iron Man." The soundtrack also includes good folk-rock ballads from Brian Vander Ark "I Went with the Road" and Coby Brown "Second Chance", along with some catchy pop
ock by Imagine Dragons "Hear Me," "Fade" and Jump Jump Dance Dance "2.0". Interspersed with Richey's softer instrumentals, these tracks provide variety and vibrancy to the album overall.
