Children's Literature
The youngest of scholars will receive a surprisingly thorough introduction to the continent of Antarctica via this book, one of seven such works in the "Pull Ahead Books-Continents" series. Basic information about Antarctica's geography, climate, and animal inhabitants are presented, illustrated by full-color photographs. Two colorful and easy-to-read maps are included: one delineates South America's location in relation to Earth's six other continents; the other provides a basic visual of Antarctica itself. Since the continent has no countries or human inhabitants, descriptions of its native animals are more extensive than in other works in this series. A handy page titled "Cool Facts About Antarctica" provides thumbnail information about the continent's size, average temperatures, seven species of penguins, etc. The book also contains an index, a glossary (the words it defines are highlighted in bold throughout the text), and a page suggesting Web sites and books to access for additional information. This volume should serve as an easy-to-read reference source for kindergarteners through second graders who are just beginning to learn about the world's continents. 2005, Lerner Publications Company, Ages 5 to 7.—Robbin Gould
