Maze have been a fan favorite since the mid-'70s; while they've received little critical notice or adulation except among soul and R&B scribes, Maze have seldom been out of the charts since making their debut on Capitol. Lead singer Frankie Beverly's roots extend back to classic doo wop and East Coast soul; although he made the transition to funk, then urban material, Beverly always had plenty of soul and passion in his vocals. Maze also blazed their own musical trail; when such competitors as Earth, Wind & Fire, the Bar-Kays, Con Funk Shun, and Slave were featuring surging horn sections and jazz-tinged arrangements with heavy basslines, Beverly and company favored rock-influenced guitar parts juxtaposed against soulful organ riffs or synthesizer riffs and just a trace of reggae and/or Latin rhythm. Beverly enjoyed several hits on Capitol, but became unsatisfied with the label's inability to break the group beyond the R&B/funk market. They departed Capitol in the late '80s, and resurfaced on Warner Bros., where they continued making strong, distinctive releases. Anthology gathers the best (at least most of the best) singles the band did for Capitol, among them classics like "Southern Girl," "Before I Let Go," the complete "Joy and Pain," and "Happy Feelin's." British journalist David Nathan's notes are comprehensive, and nicely combine anecdotal and discographical references.

Frankie Beverly is the best singer. What's so great about 'em that they sound the same in person as on the albums,CD's,etc. His voice is just..what I can say GREAT!!!!!!
I have been loving Frankie Beverly and his music for so long, It's funny that I don't actually have any of his CD's though. I'll tell you one thing, after this write up, I'll have his entire collection, thanks to BN Music.
My name is Lynda and i just wanted to write and say how much i adore this band. It gives me great pleasure to go see them in concert because their music is like no other band i have heard in my life time. When i listen to Maze it takes me back to a point in my life that i never will forget, I had the chance to meet the group in person in 1979 for the first in my life and i have been a great fan every since, in fact Roame Lowry happens to be my sons uncle. So to Maze i say, keep on keeping on because God has Bless this group to still be here and doing very well. If they don't ever put out another new release it will be just find, because we will always be able to jam to the hits that they have given us. Happy Holiday Maze, and may The Good Lord continue to Bless each of you as well as a whole, I love you all very much, and thanks for the wonderful songs.
Wow, I saw Maze in concert twice and they were simply incredable. My fist experience seeing them live was when I purchased the tickets for my sister's B-day. I became hooked after the first song... I let my brother borrow one of my Maze CD's and he misplaced it (I was almost in tears)because after 3 months he still has not found it, so I decided to purchase the Anthology. Although the site only give you samples of the songs on the CD, I know I will cherish this one as much as the others recordings I have. They are such Great Performers and Excellent Musicians.. If you haven't seen them in concert, Please do so when you have the opportunity. YOU ARE IN FOR THE CONCERT OF A LIFT TIME.
