This collection of primary scriptural materials--carefully edited for understanding--is a perfect accompaniment to any world religions text. Robert E. Van Voorst's informative introductions, charts of scripture canons, detailed annotations that explain more difficult language, illuminating vignettes, and other pedagogy--in addition to his meticulous editing of the selections themselves--make them accessible and interesting to first-time readers.

Organized to help readers compare the various scriptures and traditions, each religion's scriptural selections include such topics as history, doctrinal teachings, ethical systems, methods of organization, worship, devotion, ritual, and meditation. The introductory chapter introduces the art of reading scripture, with practical suggestions, a pronunciation guide for foreign words, and other aids.
