Overview

Since Anthology covers the bulk of Sammy Hagar's hits up to 1987, it serves as a satisfying retrospect of his first ten years as a solo artist while adding on a few Montrose tracks for good measure. "Your Love Is Driving Me Crazy," "Two Sides of Love," and "I Can't Drive 55" represent his more AOR-guided ventures, which make up three of Hagar's four Top 40 singles, while other cuts like "Keep on Rockin," "This Planet's on Fire," "Cruisin' and Boozin," and "Heartbeat" are some of the better examples of his boisterous, guitar-driven days long before he joined Van Halen. His version of Van Morrison's "Flamingos Fly" is one of the set's best tracks, while Big Brother & the Holding Company's "Piece of My Heart" is a good example of Hagar's rust-covered vocal range. A good feel for Hagar's short stint with Montrose is attained through both "Bad Motor Scooter" and "Paper Money," and only a couple of tracks ("Connection" and "I've Done Everything for You") act as real added weight. Because Sammy Hagar's albums are spotty and can be quite tedious from end to end, Anthology succeeds in covering a lot of ground all at once. Another compilation titled Unboxed combines a number of Anthology's tracks with some of the better songs from 1987's Sammy Hagar album for a different assortment of Hagar's hits.
